Going Green Product, The e-Cigarette

In 2004, a company in China invented a new gadget that immediately stirred up a lot of controversy; electronic cigarettes. These cigarettes look very much like regular cigarettes, but rather than containing tobacco, the barrel of the cigarette is simply a battery, atomizer, a small LED light, and a disposable cartridge.

So what are e-cigarettes, and how do they work, and why would any smoker want to switch?

E-cigarettes look nearly identical to a normal cigarette but they are quite different. The heart of the e-cigarette is the replaceable cartridge. This cartridge contains water, propylene glycol and nicotine. When a user inhales, they are inhaling the nicotine to which they have become addicted, and they exhale the propylene glycol in the form of smoke. Polypropylene glycol is the same compound that is used to make stage and night club smoke.

The nicotine cartridges are available in varying strengths, from full strength to even cartridges with no nicotine. Within a few puffs of the e-cigarette, the user gets the same effect as smoking a traditional cigarette.

Benefits

1. The most significant benefit of e-cigarettes is improved health. Everyone is aware that smoking causes a host of nasty diseases. the worst being lung cancer. Cigarettes contain large amounts of chemicals known to cause cancer, but e-cigarettes have eliminated these carcinogens. Nicotine is addicting but not considered a carcinogen so it is much healthier to use e-cigarettes than traditional cigarettes.

2. The smoke given off by e-cigarettes is harmless water vapor so the dangers of second hand smoke are eliminated. No longer are children and other household members exposed to the second hand smoke that has been linked to asthma and other respiratory diseases.

3. They are a great “going green” product, because the toxic smoke is not being given off into the atmosphere. It eliminates the problem of littering the environment with cigarette butts and protects wildlife from ingesting.

4. E-cigarettes, over the long haul are less expensive to use than traditional cigarettes. With the money you save, you could purchase a gym membership and really improve your health.

5. E-cigarettes are easy to carry and do not crush like traditional cigarettes.

6. Switching cartridges is a snap, and they come in different strengths of nicotine allowing a user to taper off their cigarette use and they also come in an assortment of flavors. Imagine getting your chocolate fix and nicotine fix in one fell swoop!

7. Satisfaction rate using electronic cigarettes is nearly 90-95%. Die hard smokers are easily making the switch from traditional cigarettes to e-cigarettes with no difficulty.

8. Since e-cigarettes are not giving off anything but safe water vapor, they can be smoked in any place that smoking is now banned.

Cons of e-cigarettes

1. The initial cost to purchase a starter kit is higher than a pack of cigarettes, but an average user can recoup the cost in as little as a month and a half.

2. Several companies have emerged that make a totally inferior product.

3. The United States Food and Drug Administration tried to ban the sale of e-cigarettes stating they were an unregulated drug delivery system. The ruling came out in favor of the e-cigarette companies so sale of these devices need not come under FDA regulations.

4. Since they look so real, users of this product may have a lot of explaining to do if they use them in non-smoking areas.

While the jury is out as to whether or not an individual could quit smoking using e-cigarettes, the health benefit is clear. Eliminating the carcinogens given off from traditional cigarettes is good for an individual’s health, it is healthier for the people around them and is certainly better for the environment.
